Still, around Mother’s Day every year, I love to think about my mother and how much I love being a mother.
At choir the other night, we were each asked to share a special thought about our mothers. For some reason, what popped into my mind was how my very young mother dropped out of college to have me. It was what young women did in those days. Then, about eighteen years later, she worked to help put me through college, making me the first one in her immediate family to graduate. But she was the second. Once she got me launched, she went back and finished college herself. This was followed by a long career as a classroom teacher and a librarian. Not a day passes that my life is not better because of something she taught me. I imagine there are hundreds of her students who could say the same thing. Happy Mother’s Day.
She was a good substitute teacher also. I didnt act up too much when she was in front of the class. Respect I guess.
Yes. Mother substituted both before and after her actual career. Oddly, in those days, un-credentialed people could work in the classroom.) Early on, she used her income from substituting to help pay for my education. Later, she did it well into her eighties. I’m pretty sure no one ever gave her any trouble 🙂 She will be pleased to know that you remember her.
